“Maggie May” What Rod Stewart was really saying, as interpreted by Amanda Adams.
This song likely has a meaning already. I'm sure it's deep. This is how I feel about it though.
LYRIC: “Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you”
MEANING: I’ve laid awake all night, feeling guilty, and it’s time to come clean.
LYRIC: “It’s late September and I really should be back at school”
MEANING: So, here it is: I’m under a lot of pressure. My parents are paying my tuition, and school is really crazy right now.
LYRIC: “I know I keep you amused, but I feel I’m being used”
MEANING: It’s all your fault I’m here, you got me drunk and I can’t help that I’m good natured when I’m drinking.
LYRIC: “Oh, Maggie I couldn’t have tried anymore”
MEANING: There are circumstances at play here, which I can’t exactly explain...
LYRIC: “You stole my heart and that’s what really hurt”
MEANING: It’s not you, it’s me… and leaving is hurting ME more than it’s going to hurt you.
LYRIC: “The morning sun when it’s in your face really shows your age”
MEANING: You’re an old hag, and I can’t stand looking at your face in the daylight.
LYRIC: “But that don’t worry me none in my eyes you’re everything”
MEANING: Okay, that came out wrong. Really, your face is so old that I can’t be seen with you in public, but I’m trying to be nice
LYRIC: “I laugh at all of your jokes, my love you didn’t need to coax”
MEANING: You’re a funny old lady, I’ll give you that… and I don’t want to hurt your feelings, BUT…
LYRICS: “Oh, Maggie, I couldn’t have tried anymore”
MEANING: I seriously just CAN’T do it, this was a mistake
LYRIC: “You lured me away from home, just to save you from being alone”
MEANING: Like the sirens of mythology, you lured me to the rocks, you gave me free booze. You also said you had your own place, so I thought it’d be cool to kick it.
LYRIC: “You stole my soul and that’s a pain I can do without”
MEANING: Again, you’re hurting ME when I leave, and I can’t stand the pain of leaving you (Or your old face…)
LYRIC: “I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school”
Meaning: So, I’m going to go back to kicking it with my homies who are my age
LYRIC: “Or steal my daddy’s cue and make a living out of playing pool”
MEANING: We’re going to the bars downtown and I just so happened to come across this real nice pool stick.
LYRIC: “Or find myself a rock and roll band, that needs a helpin’ hand”
MEANING: And my friends just started this garage band, and are starting to get groupies
LYRIC: “Oh Maggie I wish I’d never seen your face”
MEANING: Oh, why didn’t I notice that last night?!
LYRIC: “You made a first class fool out of me”
MEANING: I’m going to get so much shit when my friends see me, they know I left with you last night.
LYRIC: “You stole my heart but I love you anyway”
MEANING: Really, I love you (cause I don’t want to hurt your feelings…) but we’re never doing this again, thanks for the booze.
LYRIC: “Maggie I wish I’d never seen your face…”
MEANING: Damn, If I would have noticed that stash from the jump, I wouldn’t be in this situation
LYRIC: “I’ll get on back home one of these days…”
MEANING: As soon as enough time has passed for everyone to forget last night’s antics.
The End.
